A Special Team

Jamie and Zoe

I adopted Zoe from the Memphis Humane Society in February of 2001. She was given to me as a Valentine’s Day Present, definitely the best present I have ever gotten. They estimated she was about 3 months old at the time which would put her date of birth somewhere around mid-November. She had been found roaming on Central Avenue after almost being hit by a car. I can’t even imagine who wouldn’t want her, but it was their loss and my gain. The day we walked into the Humane Society was the first day Zoe had been available for adoption; she was getting her picture taken to be posted on the website. She was an awkward looking puppy; her head was much bigger than the rest of her body but she had the sweetest face and she looked so scared. Something about her drew me in from the first moment I saw her. We played with her for awhile and decided to go to a few more rescue organizations before we made a final decision. She was the first dog I saw and I didn’t know if that was why I immediately wanted to take her home. By the end of the week, I couldn’t get her out of my mind, so Saturday morning we went to the Humane Society and made Zoe a member of the family. She has been a blessing in my life that I can’t even begin to describe. Zoe is my angel and the love of my life.

I always knew she would make a great therapy dog. She is one of the gentlest animals I have ever encountered and she just adores everyone. After thinking about it for a year, I finally asked someone if they knew how to get your dog registered and was told to contact Mid-South Therapy Dogs. We went through training and were tested in May 2006. We passed with flying colors, although during training it was questionable at times whether or not I was going to ruin it for the both of us. Needless to say, it has changed both of our lives forevermore.

Camp Good Grief was our first Therapy Dog event and Zoe was a huge success.

I can’t even begin to describe the different emotions that come over you when you walk into a room and see the look on a child’s face when they see your dog. The difference it makes to that child, even if it’s for a moment, to experience the unconditional love that an animal has to offer is indescribable. Camp Good Grief was just the beginning of an incredible journey upon which Zoe and I have embarked. We look forward to making the many memories that lie ahead.
